 Memorandum

Rain continued for an half hour

About noon, a young male hyena, said by his keeper, Abraham Zreeham, a Jew, native of the city of Marocco ( who told me on 28th February 1830 that he had it that day a year and a half in his possession) to be nearly two years old.

Young wolf recd from the Sultan.(28)

1½ Visited with Seedy Mohamed & Abensur Seedy Mohamed Ben Dris the Minister with whom I had an audience of 2 hours & stated all the questions as stated in separate paper marked A.

He presented me with a beautiful carpet of a curious Draha fabric & very pretty & remarkably well tanned leopard skin. The carpet is of a new invention among the Moors & made in the mountain district by the Province of Draha.(29)

5 pm Received present from Sultan of 2 fine young slogies, a dog & bitch of which I gave the bringer a Boutous.

{317}A bunch of herbs were brought to me this evening from Ben Dris by Seedy Mohamed ben Abdelmalek - a Moorish compliment perhaps the delicacy or intent of which is yet unexplained to me:
Louisa Spanish & Arabic: Verbuena - vulgarly in England, Lemon Plant
Nana etronge, Arabic Torongel Spanish(30)
Another of which I could not learn the name, but all three are used by the Moors for infusion in tea.

Shibt el Agoos, Arabic literally Grey hair (of) the old man(31) - Barbas de Viejo Spanish a plant much used in medicine by the Spanish physicians together with bark and deemed a good stomachic. Flora and Fauna Page
