Sign chaos

Parts of Queensland (Sunshine Coast, Brisbane - Ipswich, Gold Coast) are 50 km/h in built-up areas unless otherwise signed.

On April 29 via our local paper the transport minister along with the police informed us that the new Council (50 km/h instead of 60 km/h or greater) imposed limits contravene approved guidelines and a long standing agreement with Queensland Transport. This resulted in an unofficial black ban by police on speed detection patrols in the streets in question.

Yet in the May 12 paper a motorist doing 72 km/h was booked for 22 km/h over the limit instead of 12 km/h over in an incorrectly marked street and a senior police sergeant informed us that the new ruling had been enforced since March 1.

In the May 20 paper we were informed Council voted to rescind their previous decision and the incorrectly signed streets were to be in line with the QLD transport pamphlet. The police indicated they would lift their unofficial black ban if the speed change gets the green light.

I quote from a two page letter sent to me from Queensland Transport dated May 17, 1999.

"Regarding enforcement, as the 50 km/h is a big adjustment for motorists, an amnesty applies until 1 June 1999. Motorists, found exceeding, to a minor degree, the speed limit in 50 km/h speed zones (unsigned or signed), will be warned and issued with a brochure explaining the 50 km/h initiative. After this period, enforcement of these zones will proceed as usual."

The above would lead to public confusion, correct? All of the above incorrect sign problems have been rectified for the time being.

Standard disclaimers apply as I'm so confused. Al
