When Alan Martin first went to
Max Meldrums Painting Studio
there were many plaster casts around. Many of these were Death
Masks
of well known people suchas Beethoven and Voltaire. Then there
were copies of many famous sculptors works,
these were used in Still Life Paintings and as practice for
Portraits
( at least they stayed still ).
Max Meldrum taught Alan how to take a cast of a persons face (
dead or alive ).
In the early 50's Alan purchased several plaster casts from a
painter returning to Italy.
At this stage Alan was teaching in several studios and needed
more than one
of each cast, so using his knowledge as a dental technician he
began to produce them.
Students bought them in order to practice at home.
Over the years Alan added to his
collection by making casts of family and friends.
Alan was asked several times to make casts of friends in the
painting fraternity after their death.
He made a cast of his Dad which is better than any photo.
